In 1984 the business had expanded to such an extent that there was a requirement to move the bakery again, this time to Manchester Road, Leigh.
It was around then that the third generation, Richard and John Waterfield became involved in the management of the business having spent several years both in the U.K. and Europe developing skills in the art of baking.
Albert Waterfield continued as Managing Director until the early 1990's when he formally handed over control to sons, Richard (Chairman) and John (Managing Director). He officially retired in 1997, was awarded an MBE in 1998 and still maintains an active interest in the company.
Today the bakery has modern facilities complementing craft skills by using up-to-date production methods and we believe that we have remained loyal to the founding ideals of product quality and service that meet our customer’s expectations in the same way that Albert and Alice did in their early years.
In February 2007 the Company opened its first shop under the Waterfields Select brand, in Leigh...........
This new concept operation concentrates on selling a range of sandwiches, soups, savouries and cakes geared towards the breakfast and lunchtime trade, for customers to 'eat on the go'. A variety of cold drinks and Fair Trade coffee freshly brewed on the premises is also on sale. We hope this new style shop gives customers a shopping experience that reflects our independence and investment in the high street.
In December 2008 we acquired a further 10 retail shops.......
On Friday 5th December 2008 John Pimblett and Sons Ltd went into administration. Waterfields bought 10 of their retail bakers shops in and around St Helens and saved 65 jobs. We reopened 9 of the shops on Monday 8th December.
